Type Specimen Booklet
Encourage Futura Sales Through An Attractive Presentation
How can type advertising methods of the 15th century be translated into a modernized type specimen booklet? To demonstrate Futura’s range and quality key elements to advertise include:
A variety of typeface sizes
An appendix of character sets featured in the foundry’s font.
Short sentences/longer blocks of text to convey Futura’s feel and readability.
Implementation of typeface history with updated branding
An engaging use of the color scheme, formatting, and graphical elements
Research, Ideation, Creation, & Critiques
To gain clarity on who found the typeface, why it was formed, where it originated, and what its purpose is, I investigated the fundamental components of Futura. It is inspired by Bauhaus design which led me to start sketching ideas that included abstract, angular, and geometric patterns like this style. To complement the simplicity, symmetry, and cleanliness of the font I wanted the 3 primary colors red, blue, and yellow as part of my color palette. I sketched over a dozen options for each double-page layout, as each piece of content would require a different use of the space. Displaying my work allowed me to pinpoint the typographic features that weren’t standing out as I intended. As well as where grid structures could be used in implementing more flow throughout my design.

Taking Criticism And Making It Constructive
With typographical elements of Futura being a priority in this project I learned to ensure all my text display was correct before adding other design aspects. Taking critiques from peers and professionals aided me in adjusting distracting stroke sizes, aligning text, and incorporating more white space. Adjusting some of my color tints brought the necessary contrast between my text and design. To give my booklet a cohesive look I integrated clean geometric patterns, fun shapes, eye-catching colors, and Futura text throughout my design.

Enhanced my creative skills by discovering design solutions to increase interest and engagement regarding typography
Differentiating typography and recognizing the little details that help in marketing
Making use of kerning, tracking, and leading tools equipped me with proper vocabulary and standards to produce properly spaced text.
Matching physical attributes of Futura with elements of design to maximize communication
Rebranding Futura with a friendly, youthful, and fun color scheme brought personality to what was being sold.
